Short Summary: Pantheras, cheetahs, cougars, snow leopards, ocelots, bobcat, jaguarundi and margay are considered by the state as "Dangerous Animals" and require permit approval by the Director of Natural Resources. Permits for these wild felines will only be issued for USDA licensed exhibitions, zoos, for scientific or research purposes, or to animal refuges by the Director of Natural Resources.

Illinois does issue fur farm licenses for bobcat. Importation of any wild feline into the state requires approval from Director.

An intent to import wildlife must be filed with state Director not less than 30 days prior to importation, and must include veterinary proof animal is free of disease, and director must be satisfied that in no way does the animal pose a threat to wildlife or potential to become a nuisance to people of the state. Zoos and public displays of wildlife are exempt from permit requirement.
